General Information

The new Division of Solid Mechanics was created in July 2014, and was formed from the old divisions of Mechanics and Solid Mechanics. Our teaching includes basic mechanics of particles and rigid bodies, as well as basic strength-of-materials. We are also responsible for a large number of advanced courses in, e.g., continuum mechanics, finite element methods, mechanics of materials, multibody dynamics, structural optimization and biomechanics.

Our main research areas are:

  • Structural optimization, with focus on topology optimization
  • Biomechanics and mechanobiology
  • Optmization and robustness analyses of non-linear structures, with focus on vehicle applications
  • Deformation and fatigue life analysis in high temperature mechanics, with focus on gas turbine applications
  • Fatigue life in aerostructural applications
